ROM is just an abbreviation
ROM is just an abbreviation for Registry of Marriages. Mainly, this thread is for people wanting to chat and find out more about the process of registering for a marriage certificate as well as places to hold the ceremony. Don't worry about being a noob. We all started out that way. =P
LOL :) I thought that I am
LOL :) I thought that I am the only one noob here :) Thanks, Ming Siong :) One more question, is ROM commonly used term/abbreviation in Singapore and is this term also used in other countries near Singapore? In our place, we are not familiar with it. What about solemnization - of marriage? When you're talking about both terms in this forum... do you mean the same thing?
Hi, I have been reading this
Hi, I have been reading this thread with interest. In Singapore, the street language of getting married 'in paper & in properly governmentally recognised manner' has always been done through the Registry Of Marriage, and hence the often misused and misconceptualised term, ROM. I am not sure about other countries but often foreigners refer to this occasion as a wedding because a large portion of the community overseas get solemnised on the same day we perform our customary wedding, commonly known as Actual Day - which in turn is another misused and misconceptualised term. I have done a little check on the dictionary, the commonly recognised term of our 'ROM' locally, is called Marriage Solemnisation, where the term solemnisation refers to: The public performance of a sacrament or solemn ceremony with all appropriate ritual; "the celebration of marriage". The term Sacrament goes something like this: A formal religious act conferring a specific grace on those who receive it. The term Matrimony is the state of being a married couple voluntarily joined for life. The Sacrament of Marriage is a term that can be used in place of Marriage Solemnisation. Talk to a church friend, Catholic or Christian, they can tell you more about it. The Priest or Pastor is the best person to refer to. Marriage is a beautiful moment, and is oftened most solemn, peaceful, and beautifully elegant in a church wedding, at least to my personal view. Lastly, R.O.M. is the place where we go to, in order to get solemnised by a Justice Of Peace appointed by the Registra, or at least used to go to mandatorily speaking. Marriage Solemnisation is the process by which we engaged in being voluntarily married to one another of the opposite sex (in some countries, the same sex); for life and eternity. That should be clear enough I hope :)
