FORGET Hollywood's star-studded lavish weddings. A wedding that took place here on Tuesday has quite possibly equalled some of the best in Beverly Hills.
.
The $10-million fairy-tale wedding between a Singapore bride and the son of an Indian tycoon had all the trappings to be dubbed the wedding of the year: A 6.5-carat engagement ring and a 10-carat diamond wedding band worth at least $1 million, 2,000 guests — and even a groom on a white horse.
.
Yes, for 27-year-old Adarsh Garodia, the only son of a Calcutta millionaire, and 25-year-old Neha Didwania, the eldest daughter of the owner of a worldwide steel supply chain, only the finest would do.
.
Decked out like a prince, Mr Adarsh arrived on a pure white horse at the Ritz Carlton Hotel on Tuesday evening to claim his bride, who has a Masters degree from the London School of Economics.
.
The wedding planners had in fact hoped to get an elephant to take him up the broad, winding slope of the hotel's driveway in real maharajah fashion, but that, apparently, was something even money could not buy.
.
About 2,000 guests were present to toast to a wedding they said was just about fit for a king. About 300 of them were flown in, all expenses paid, from countries such as India, Japan, the United States and the United Kingdom.
.
Said the Ritz-Carlton's associate director for social events Shamini Suppiah: "This is the largest-scale wedding that we have had here, not only in terms of guest rooms but also in terms of the traditions and ceremonies that are taking place in the hotel. Some of these ceremonies are usually held at home but in this case, they are all held here."
.
Mr Mark Roche, 39, who works for the bride's father as an operations manager, gave a hint of the glamour: "Have you seen Bollywood movies? The girls were that pretty; the guys looked like magazine models. The sarees cost thousands of dollars — and that's only for the average guest."
.
The couple met last December through a mutual friend and got engaged three months later.
.
Said the groom: "I love her. She is the most perfect woman that I've ever wanted. She is absolutely amazing."
.
Love also blossomed quickly for the bride, whose family is originally from Rajasthan, the same state as India's richest billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, but now resides in Singapore.
.
"He has a fantastic personality and we love each other to death. I met him twice and the second time I knew he was the one," she said.
.
The wedding ceremony that began with prayers on Sunday night was solemnised early yesterday and ended with more singing and dancing until dawn.
.
The bride will move to Calcutta to live with her husband — but not before a month-long honeymoon in Greece and Italy.
